Lynne Cox Swimming in Bering Sea
(Original Caption) Lynne Cox, 30, shown during a recent practice swim in the Bering Sea, succeeded in swimming across the 2.7 mile Bering Strait, wearing only a bathing suit and bathing cap despite the frigid 42-degree water temperature. Cox, of Los Alamitos, California, became the first person ever to swim the strait across the U.S.-Soviet border and the international dateline. She started from Alaska's Little Diomede Island and finished her swim at Russian Big Diomede Island.
