Dawn Ashworth

A portrait of Dawn Ashworth, a 15 year old schoolgirl who's body was found raped and strangled on August 2, 1986 in a wooded area near a footpath called Ten Pound Lane in Enderby, Leicestershire, England. Colin Pitchfork (born 23 March 1960) was convicted of the rape and murder of two schoolgirls in Leicestershire during the 1980s. He was the first person to be convicted using DNA profiling after the rape and murder of Lynda Mann in Narborough in November 1983, and Dawn Ashworth in Enderby in July 1986. In 1984, Professor Alec Jeffreys together with colleagues at Leicester University had devised a way to use the newly discovered properties of DNA to provide a genetic fingerprint. Pitchfork was arrested on September 19th, 1987 and sentenced to life imprisonment on 22nd January 1988 after pleading guilty to his crimes. (Photo by Neville Chadwick/Popperfoto via Getty Images)
