A leading Basque politician accused of helping to fund armed Basque separatists was freed from a Madrid jail 27 May after his family and party allies raised 400,000 euros (500,000 dollars) bail. Spanish authorities had controversially detained Arnaldo Otegi, spokesman of banned Basque nationalist party Batasuna, on Wednesday on suspicion of helping to fund armed separatist movement ETA, of which Batasuna is the political mouthpiece.
