The Housewife's Dream' market, Croydon, World War Two, 9 August 1941. 'Crowds of women shoppers at the new barter market. The age-old system of obtaining goods by barter was revived at Croydon when Sir Herbert Williams, MP for South Croydon, opened a special market in the town. Local gardeners who have grown more than they need for their own consumption exchanged their surplus vegetables for clothes, footwear, blankets, furniture and other goods - only surrendering coupons when necessary'. The market was open for several weeks. (Photo by Daily Herald Archive/National Science & Media Museum/SSPL via Getty Images)
