Candida Albicans
This photomicrograph reveals histopathologic changes indicative of endocarditis caused by the fungus Candida albicans, 1963. In severely immunocompromised patients, Candida can cause inflammation of the endocardium, or endocarditis, which more often involves a heart valve. Untreated, this infection can "eat away" at, and damage the heart valve, causing malfunction. Image courtesy CDC/Sherry Brinkman. (Photo by Smith Collection/Gado/Getty Images).
