COMPLEX VASCULAR TISSUES--XYLEM and PHLOEM, 200X - stock photo
COMPLEX VASCULAR TISSUES--XYLEM and PHLOEM, 200X, Buttercup (Ranunculus) Root cross section. The cell walls of Xylem are stained red. These are dead and hollow VESSEL ELEMENTS that conduct water and minerals upward from the roots to the stems and leaves of the plant. The Phloem is found between the red "arms" of the xylem. The Phloem tissue includes SIEVE-TUBE MEMBERS and COMPANION CELLS (have a nucleus). Phloem conducts carbohydrates (like sucrose) produced by photosynthesis mostly in the leaves. This image also shows: part of the STELE (central vascular cylinder of the root), ENDODERMIS, PERICYCLE, and surrounding PARENCHYMA CELLS that contain purplish STARCH GRAINS.
