Hundreds stranded as Barcelona’s railway network faces disruptions after major blackout

BARCELONA, SPAIN - APRIL 29: A major power outage on Monday severely disrupted Catalonia’s rail network, leaving Rodalies services suspended and Sants Station at the heart of the chaos, even as power was restored across most of Spain by Tuesday, April 29.Hundreds of affected travelers have spent the night at the station amid confusion and a lack of official information, with many left sleeping on benches or the floor as they waited for updates.In response, the Red Cross has deployed a relief operation outside the station, providing water, food, blankets, and basic support to stranded passengers, including elderly individuals and families with children.Power was restored across most of Spain and Portugal on Tuesday after a major blackout on Monday.“99.95% of demand has been restored,” Spanish energy provider Red Electrica announced on Tuesday on X, as they continue to “fully normalize” the system.Portuguese electricity distribution network operator E-Redes also affirmed on Tuesday that the service has been fully restored and normalized, according to Publico.The Spanish Transport Ministry announced on X that all airports are “operational,” while in Portugal, Lisbon Airport still has several flights canceled, Publico reported.(Footage by Lorena Sopena/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
