Corrientes is a city in Argentina, capital and main social and economic center of the province of the same name. Founded on April 3, 1588 by Juan de Vera y Aragón, it is the oldest city in northeastern Argentina. It is located on the banks of a bend in the Paraná River, 50 km downstream from the confluence with the Paraguay River, approximately 1,150 km upstream from its mouth on the Río de la Plata. Together with the surrounding towns, it makes up the Greater Corrientes urban agglomerate.
