Infrastructure damage, adverse weather conditions compound challenges for Palestinians

GAZA, PALESTINE - JAN. 4, 2024: The lives of Palestinians displaced by the Israeli bombardment in the besieged Gaza Strip are becoming increasingly challenging due to the damage to infrastructure and unfavorable weather conditions. Many displaced Palestinians taking shelter at Jabalia Refugee Camp in northern Gaza are trying to sustain their lives under harsh conditions. Footage on Thursday, Jan. 4, shows some people and animal-drawn carriages moving in flooded streets as well as civilians around makeshift tents at the camp. Since the beginning of the Israeli onslaught against the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army has intensified aerial and artillery bombardment on Jabalia and its refugee camp, resulting in hundreds of deaths and injuries. Israel has launched air and ground attacks on the Gaza Strip since a cross-border attack by Palestinian resistance group Hamas on Oct. 7. At least 22,313 Palestinians have since been killed and 57,296 others injured, according to Gaza’s health authorities, while nearly 1,200 Israelis are believed to have been killed in the Hamas attack. The Israeli onslaught has left Gaza in ruins, with 60% of the enclave’s infrastructure damaged or destroyed, and nearly 2 million residents displaced amid acute shortages of food, clean water, and medicines.
