Sleepy Montenegrins attend ‘Laziness’ Olympics to win 1,000 Euros
PLUZINE, MONTENEGRO - AUGUST 18: Traditional lying down competition, or so-called “World Lazy Olympics” has kicked off on Friday (Aug. 18) in the Montenegrin Ethno-Village Brezna, situated between Nikšić and Plužine near the border with Bosnia.
This twelfth gathering witnesses a record number of participants, reaching 21 contestants this year.
Among them is the reigning champion from 2021, Dubravka Aleksić from Podgorica, who holds the record for lying down for an astonishing 117 hours.
Compared to previous years, the prize fund has been increased, with the participant who remains lying down the longest set to receive a reward of 1,000 euros.
The rules stipulate that contestants are prohibited from getting up, yet sleeping, reading books, eating, and drinking are permitted. Every eight hours, competitors are allowed to use the restroom.
This unique competition makes Montenegro stand out in Europe, particularly due to the accepted stereotype about the nation's perceived laziness.
From the very start of the event, participants have been enjoying the natural surroundings of Brezna.
Some have already opted to sleep at the outset, while others rest in the shade, engrossed in reading.
One of the contestants Dimitrije, expressed his hopes for the 1,000 euro prize.
He said, "I hope for victory; the prize is challenging. It's the main reason I applied. But also, having a few days of peace, that's invaluable. No matter how long it lasts, these days, you don't think about anything. In this fast-paced life we live in, every hour, let alone a day, is too great to dedicate to ourselves. This is the best moment to devote 24 hours to just ourselves.”
Another participant Ana anticipates victory and said that she plans to spend her time reading books and using her phone.
"I am content; we are hospitably hosted by the organizers. I hope it remains this way until the end, and that I will secure victory," Ana emphasized.
