Petronio Alvarez Pacific Festival held in Bogota
BOGOTA, COLOMBIA - AUGUST 31: Wealth, ancestral knowledge, and joy once again took over the center of the Colombian capital Bogota on Saturday (August 31) with one of the most important events of Afro culture in Latin America.
The Festival, in its version for the capital, took place at the Plaza La Santamaria in the city of Bogota. This festival, which has been celebrated in the city of Cali since 1997, revolves around the customs of Afro-descendant communities from southwestern Colombia.
To the sounds of the marimba, the rhythms of the chirimia, dances such as the currulao and the typical gastronomy of the Afro-Colombian Pacific population of the departments of Cauca, Choco, Narino and Valle del Cauca, hundreds of people gathered to pay tribute to the culture of Colombia's Afro-descendants with their attitudes and physical expressions.
This event coincides with the celebration of the International Day of People of African Descent, and serves as a nod to the region of the country where the Petronio Alvarez Festival was born, an area where the majority of the population is of African descent.
